Coach bolts are the premier choice for joining timber to timber, either internally or externally.

Coach bolts, also known as carriage bolts or cup square bolts, are heavy duty and come in a range of sizes and lengths, characterised by their ‘M’ number. An M6 coach bolt is 6mm wide, for example.

Coach bolts conform to DIN603 (bolt) and DIN934 (nut) standards.

What is a coach bolt?

Coach bolts have a domed head that’s usually square, circular, or hexagonal. They are typically used for attaching heavy timbers.

Coach bolts have a square section underneath the dome to stop the head rotating when tightened, giving the bolt a locking capability and making it easier to install. They also come complete with nuts.

What coach bolts are used for

In addition to attaching timber to timber, you can use some coach bolts for attaching wood to metal, adding to their versatility.

Coach bolts deliver a more secure connection than most other types of fasteners and fixings and provide a good-looking finish, hence their popularity.

Coach bolts feature in a wide range of security products, such as fencing, where it’s essential that the bolts can only be removed from one side.

Do I need a washer with a coach bolt?

You can use modern-day coach bolts as they are with just the nut; however you may choose to use a washer to spread the load in certain circumstances, or to provide a flat surface to fix the nut to.
